First, we looked at the latest census data for median income levels and affordability-specifically, how much do homes cost in each neighborhood. We then looked at the things that most people find important when determining where they want to buy their forever home–is the neighborhood safe?

Are there jobs? And, is there a lot to do? We discovered some interesting neighborhood facts that might even surprise the people who currently live in Memphis.

For instance, East Memphis-Colonial-Yorkshire might not have a shiny exterior, but once inside this neighborhood, you are greeted with friendly people, great BBQ, and a sense of pride and community. So, want to know where it’s safe to “go walkin’ in Memphis”?

You can start in Memphis’ number one best neighborhood. But, to get to this list, you’re going to have to keep reading. It is described as a hip area at the core of the city, with a mixture of stately period homes and old-fashioned apartment buildings.

It is a fantastic area to live if you enjoy a busy social life, as the bar and restaurant scene in this neighborhood is excellent. Many of the venues also boast live music, so there are some great places to hang out with friends. East Memphis sits just between Germantown and Midtown, both of which are also desirable areas to live. The one downside to this area is that rental costs are generally higher than most other parts of Memphis, although this is the price you will pay for living in such a desirable area.

Oakland boasts one of the lowest crime rates of anywhere in the Memphis metro area, so it is widely considered one of the safest places to live. Although there are only around seven thousand residents in this municipality, it has an increasing population due to its popularity. This area has some of the best public schools in and around Memphis, which is why Oakland consistently ranks as one of the best places to live for families.

Brighton is a town in Tipton County, Tennessee, and it has a population of just under three thousand. One feature of this area that its residents find appealing is the rural feel of the area.

It is a place that will suit people who want a quieter and more laid-back place of life than in the heart of Memphis. Other positive elements of Brighton include above-average public schools, a diverse community, varied employment opportunities, and a low cost of living.

The downside to Brighton is that the transport links are not great. Although there are not many outdoor activities or health and fitness facilities in Munford, these are the only downsides to living in this town in Tennessee. With a population of a little over six thousand people, there is a rural feel to this area. This makes it a good option for those who want to get away from the hustle and bustle of life in Memphis, while still having access to the amenities, leisure activities, and job opportunities that are available in the city.

This is easy to do because there are decent public transport links. This town has public schools that are above average, a diverse community, and a reasonable cost of living. It tends to attract families as the public schools in Millington are rated as above average. There are also many activities for people of all ages to enjoy in this neighborhood. Some other positive elements of this area are the reasonable cost of living, many employment opportunities, and a wide range of housing options. Many families live in Horn Lake, as the schools are above average and there is a good choice of family activities to enjoy in the area.

There are almost 27 thousand residents living in this Memphis suburb in DeSoto County, and the area has a sparse suburban feel. The community is diverse, there are lots of jobs, and the cost of living is reasonable.

Like in most areas, there are also some negatives to life in Horn Lake. These include poor transport links and the lack of outdoor activities to enjoy. As one of the smaller suburbs of Memphis with a population of around 2, residents, Lynchburg offers a rural feel. It is an area that appeals to a wide range of people, including families, and young professionals, so this means that the community is diverse.

Some of the positive elements of life in Lynchburg are the varied housing, the reasonable cost of living, the good range of family-oriented activities, and the above-average schools.

The downside to living in Lynchburg is the poor transport links, so it is not a good option for those who need to commute using public transport. Marion is one of the most affordable areas to live in Memphis, which is one of the reasons why this is such a desirable area. This suburb of Memphis has a diverse community of 12 thousand residents, and there is a sparse suburban feel and a strong sense of community. The public schools are rated as above average, and there is a good range of leisure activities for families to enjoy.

On the downside, the area is lacking in things to enjoy in the evenings, so the nightlife is not particularly vibrant.

This city is far above average in every category, and the best part? It’s far more affordable than the other cities listed above. So, you get a big bang for your buck here. Next 10 Cities. Figuring out the best suburbs around Memphis was pretty simple; we just needed to list several things that people like, and then find out which cities have the most of those things. Then we used the newest American Community Survey data for to research each suburb.

Additionally, we limited the analysis to places that have over 2, people. This left us with a grand total of 18 suburbs to evaluate around Memphis. And finally, we crowned the city with the best quality of life index the “Best Suburb near Memphis.
